On October 29, during its earnings announcement, Samsung Electronics refrained from unveiling a fresh shareholder return strategy, leading to its stock price relinquishing initial gains and experiencing a sharp decline of up to 6.6%. The tech giant indicated that it would disclose the strategy by the end of January. In stark contrast, SK Hynix not only reported robust earnings on Wednesday but also revealed plans to distribute an extra $45 billion to shareholders. Moreover, Samsung's chip division profits fell below forecasts, and its capital investments surged notably, further eroding investor confidence in the firm. eToro analyst Josh Gilbert highlighted that the market must bide its time until January to view the full return strategy, creating a gap when positive cues should have been projected. Samsung has augmented its capital investments by roughly 60% this year, and until the allocation of these funds between new production capabilities and shareholders becomes transparent, there is ambiguity regarding the actual returns investors will garner. Rob Li, Managing Partner at Amont Partners, voiced dissatisfaction over the postponement in detailing the shareholder return strategy, implying that this might lead stock traders to redirect their investments to SK Hynix or Micron in the forthcoming months, given these companies offer more transparent shareholder return avenues.
