On October 28, Seagate Technology (STX.O), a leading manufacturer of data storage devices, unveiled its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company reported revenue of $4.23 billion, marking a substantial 61% year-over-year increase and surpassing market expectations. Looking ahead, Seagate anticipates its revenue for the upcoming quarter to reach a median of $4.8 billion, outpacing the consensus market forecast by 6.7%. Notably, Seagate has achieved revenue growth for 10 consecutive quarters, suggesting that the current industry upswing, which typically spans 8 to 10 quarters, is still in full swing. The company's management projects an even more impressive 69.9% year-over-year revenue growth for the next quarter.

Days Inventory Outstanding (DIO) serves as a crucial metric for gauging the capital intensity of chip manufacturers and the cyclicality of semiconductor supply and demand. In this quarter, Seagate's DIO stood at 86 days, five days higher than the five-year average, indicating that the company's inventory levels have climbed to a historical peak. Despite these strong financial results, Seagate's stock price plummeted by more than 8% in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement.
