Microsoft is currently integrating support for Intel's APX instruction set into the test builds of Windows 11, laying the groundwork for significant performance enhancements on future PCs. The APX instruction set broadens the scope of general-purpose registers to 32, streamlines compiler register allocation, and minimizes the overhead associated with register renaming. According to Intel, a mere recompilation of applications can lead to a 10% boost in benchmark performance, as demonstrated by tests like SPEC CPU. Nevertheless, this advancement necessitates alterations to the compiler ABI, and as a result, newly developed programs will not be backward compatible with older processors or those manufactured by AMD.
