Samsung Electronics has launched a subsequent round of equipment investment for its Fab 1 in Taylor, Texas, USA, aiming to refine the final-stage setup in anticipation of mass production. This plant marks Samsung’s inaugural dedicated wafer foundry production line in the United States, with ambitions to attain a monthly production capacity of 20,000 2nm wafers by the latter half of next year. Recent equipment orders have been made to support an initial monthly output of roughly 6,000 wafers. The construction of Fab 1 commenced in 2022, with total investments so far amounting to approximately $37 billion. The plant is projected to start operations by the end of 2026 and commence mass production of EUV 2nm chips from 2027 onwards. Currently, the yield rate for its 2nm chips has climbed from around 60% at the start of the year to approximately 80%, attaining a level conducive to mass production. Prior to the start of production, the fab has already secured full-capacity 2nm orders from clients such as Tesla, Broadcom, Arm, and others. Notably, Samsung inked a long-term supply pact with Tesla in July 2025, valued at roughly $16.5 billion, with the contract extending until the end of 2033. Furthermore, Samsung intends to break ground on Taylor Fab 2 in early November; this new facility will be 1.5 times the size of Fab 1 and is slated to begin mass-producing 2nm chips by 2030. Samsung’s cumulative investment in central Texas has exceeded $37 billion, with the company obtaining the maximum direct subsidies of $4.745 billion approved under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. Presently, TSMC commands a 72.5% revenue share in the global wafer foundry market for the second quarter, while Samsung holds a 5.9% share. The production capacity and yield stability of the Taylor facility will be pivotal in determining whether Samsung can transform its existing orders into a resurgence in market share.
