On October 22, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Thursday that it will provide $389 million in research and development funding to four companies focused on power semiconductor devices and the R&D of critical materials, aiming to advance technologies such as commercial fusion energy. As a condition of the funding, the U.S. government will hold a minority equity stake in these companies but will not possess controlling shares or voting rights. Recently, the U.S. government has already issued 19 R&D grants to semiconductor companies from the $10 billion fund approved by Congress in 2022. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Lutnick stated that these funds will help accelerate semiconductor innovation in the United States and strengthen domestic energy and power resources.
