Samsung's foundry business will extend its 8nm process technology by introducing the second-generation 8LPU+ process platform, scheduled for release within the year. This process leverages mature deep ultraviolet (DUV) production lines, avoiding the need for expensive extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, with the aim of reducing production costs. Its target markets include automotive chips, robots, and edge AI chips—areas that are cost-sensitive and do not require the high expenses associated with 2nm processes. Compared to its predecessor, the 8LPU+ offers a 12% performance improvement, 15% lower power consumption, and an approximately 8% reduction in logic area.
