On October 19, due to the share price downturn of companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korea's primary pension fund, the National Pension Service (NPS), encountered substantial losses, amounting to 182 trillion Korean won (roughly $137 billion). Based on data from financial information provider FnGuide, as of October 15, the estimated value of NPS's investment portfolio, which held a stake of 5% or more in 287 listed companies, had experienced a sharp decline. It dropped from 515.93 trillion Korean won at the end of June to 333.53 trillion Korean won. This situation marks NPS's first quarterly decline since the fourth quarter of 2024, signifying a dramatic turnaround for a fund that had attained record-breaking returns in the first half of the year.
