ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a Chinese memory chip manufacturer, has recently revealed its intentions to roll out DDR5 RDIMM server memory products, which are based on a 4F² memory cell architecture, by the close of 2026. The 4F² architecture leverages Vertical Surrounding Gate (VSG) transistor technology to shrink the memory cell area to the square of four times the minimum feature size. This advancement leads to a substantial increase in the number of transistors per unit area, boosting storage density by 30% to 50%. Through the implementation of DRAM and CMOS process decoupling, coupled with wafer-level hybrid bonding technology, this architecture surpasses the physical constraints of traditional 6F² architectures. It effectively tackles challenges like leakage and short-channel effects, while also reducing power consumption. CXMT’s strides could potentially place it around two years ahead of Samsung Electronics in terms of commercialization, garnering considerable interest from the global memory sector.

DDR5 RDIMM products are required to adhere to rigorous standards for 7×24-hour uninterrupted server operation, hot-swapping capabilities, and cross-platform compatibility. CXMT’s technological leap not only strengthens its position in the market but also paves the way for China’s memory industry to progress towards more advanced technology nodes.
