Recently, a Reddit user shared their experience of purchasing what they believed to be a Samsung 8TB 9100 Pro flagship SSD from Amazon for around 8,000 yuan. However, upon testing, they discovered that the actual capacity was merely around 128GB, and the internal hardware turned out to be a generic storage device from the budget brand EVM. The user placed their order on September 20 and received the product on September 26. Upon unboxing, although there were some dents on the packaging, there were no apparent irregularities. The SSD's exterior was designed to closely mimic that of the genuine Samsung 9100 Pro. Nevertheless, after installing it in their computer, the user found that the system-recognized capacity was drastically different from the advertised specifications. Further hardware examination revealed that the drive did not incorporate any Samsung hardware. In stark contrast, Samsung's official information states that the authentic 9100 Pro utilizes Samsung's proprietary controller and V-NAND TLC flash memory. The 8TB version of this SSD boasts a maximum sequential read speed of 14.8GB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 13.4GB/s. It is also equipped with 8GB of LPDDR4X cache, offers a write endurance of 4,800TBW, and comes with a 5-year limited warranty. Commenters on the Reddit post highlighted several flaws in the counterfeit drive, such as an excessively thin thermal sticker, an incorrectly sized controller, and the absence of multiple flash memory chips on the PCB. Currently, the user is attempting to negotiate a refund with Amazon, but the process has been fraught with difficulties as the order is marked as non-returnable.
