NVIDIA is currently exploring the integration of glass substrate solutions and has forged a collaboration with SCHMID, a renowned German equipment manufacturer, alongside other industry partners. The initiative aims to support substrate producers in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan (China) in achieving full-scale development within the next two years, with the potential for implementation as early as before 2028. The core objective of this solution is to elevate AI chip performance by expanding high-bandwidth memory (HBM) capacity. Glass substrates offer several advantages, including a roughly 40% improvement in chip operational speed, nearly a 50% reduction in power consumption, and exceptional resistance to deformation under high temperatures, making them ideal for ultra-high-speed signal transmission.
However, the technology still faces hurdles, particularly in the metallization process of through-glass vias (TGVs). Additionally, customer certification for this innovative solution remains pending.
