The burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is fueling significant growth within the advanced semiconductor process market. Concurrently, it has sparked an unprecedented surge in demand for mature process chips that complement these advanced technologies. Following Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) decision to scale back production capacity for certain mature processes, a flood of orders has been redirected to other foundries, including United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (Powerchip). This shift has resulted in a scenario where supply is struggling to keep pace with demand at these facilities. UMC has already signaled its intention to implement price hikes, while Powerchip is poised to elevate its quotes by a substantial 40%, both actions underscoring the robust order intake these companies are experiencing in the near term. UMC has further indicated that if the prevailing market supply and demand dynamics persist, the magnitude of price adjustments for wafer foundry services in the upcoming year will surpass those observed in the latter half of the current year.
