On September 15, it was reported that Meta Platforms plans to deploy new self-developed ARKE chips in data centers in the first half of next year to reduce the cost and energy consumption of running artificial intelligence models. Meta first announced its self-developed AI chip plan in 2023 and is currently testing the third-generation product, MTIA 450 (codenamed Arke). The next-generation product (codenamed 500, or Astrid) is expected to complete its design within a month and be put into use by the end of 2027. Meta anticipates wider adoption of self-developed chips in the future. Jiun Song, Meta's Vice President of Engineering, stated that each generation of chips carries higher technical risks but offers significantly improved performance. Meta's Superintelligence Lab assists in fine-tuning the chips by providing insights into future AI models and their operational requirements. Song noted that these chips will be more efficient in running AI models than any products currently offered by Nvidia, thanks to Meta's extensive engineering efforts.
