Professor Zhou Linjie and Lu Liangjun’s Team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Achieve Breakthrough in Heterogeneously Integrated Electro-Optic Modulators

Recently, the research team led by Professor Zhou Linjie and Professor Lu Liangjun from the National Key Laboratory of Photon Transport and Communication at the School of Integrated Circuits, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in collaboration with Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and other institutions, has made remarkable strides in the development of microtransfer-printed heterogeneously integrated electro-optic modulators. Leveraging microtransfer-printing technology, the team successfully fabricated a high-performance thin-film lithium tantalate-silicon nitride Mach-Zehnder modulator. This modulator exhibits outstanding performance characterized by low optical loss, ultra-wide bandwidth, and long-term operational stability. The modulator has undergone validation across three key application scenarios: high-speed optical communication, terahertz wireless communication, and high-resolution radar sensing. Relevant performance metrics have reached internationally advanced levels, paving the way for scalable, high-performance cross-domain photonic chips tailored for next-generation information networks. The research findings have been published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
