Sources indicate that SK Hynix is ramping up its investment in the semiconductor production hub located in the southwestern area of Gwangju. Simultaneously, the company is devising a strategy to propel the development of the Yongin semiconductor cluster alongside its Gwangju investment. Considering that the Yongin project represents a long-term commitment in terms of both investment and construction, SK Hynix is crafting a holistic plan. This plan is designed to facilitate parallel investments while taking into account the prevailing conditions in Gwangju.

Presently, the company is deliberating on whether to redirect some of the equipment initially earmarked for the new Yongin factory to Gwangju, or instead, to acquire fresh equipment specifically tailored for Gwangju's needs. The final decision will hinge on the specific circumstances at hand. Regarding the project's timeline, it is anticipated that the land at the Gwangju military airport will be readied, and foundational construction will kick off in 2027. The objective is to have the inaugural wafer fabrication plant completed by 2029. Meanwhile, the investment in Yongin's new factory is advancing in accordance with the set schedule. Insiders from the industry have disclosed that SK Hynix is targeting the operationalization of the Phase 1 clean room of the first factory by February 2027, followed by Phase 2 in August of the same year.
