On Wednesday, US Secretary of Commerce Lutnick disclosed that the Trump administration is contemplating implementing a fresh round of import tariffs on semiconductors. The primary objective is to incentivize the semiconductor manufacturing industry to relocate to the US by imposing higher taxes on foreign-made chips. This proposed policy might be complemented by tariff exemption measures for companies that manufacture within the United States. Previously, the Trump administration had already imposed a 25% tariff on certain advanced semiconductors, and further raised this tariff in January of this year. This time around, the scope of the tariffs could potentially broaden from semiconductors themselves to encompass products that incorporate chips, such as imports of data center servers and consumer electronics.
