On August 27, eight sources familiar with the matter revealed to POLITICO that the Trump administration is considering implementing a new round of substantial semiconductor tariffs. Despite warnings from tech companies that this move could shatter hopes for U.S. dominance in the artificial intelligence sector, the administration is still evaluating the relevant proposals. It is reported that the proposed tariff plan would significantly expand the range of affected tech products, covering not only chips but also potentially laptops, gaming consoles, and data center servers that use chips. Four sources stated that U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick is inclined to link tariff exemptions for foreign companies to investments in U.S. chip manufacturing to boost domestic chip production.
