CPU Bulging Issue Resurfaces: 7800X3D Processor Suffers Severe Damage

Recently, a Reddit user by the name of Magoth04 reported that their Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor sustained severe burn damage while being used with an X870 motherboard. The setup in question comprised a Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor, an X870 motherboard, an RTX 4070 graphics card, and a 360mm all-in-one liquid cooling system. The system had been operating normally for three months, with no manual voltage adjustments or overclocking performed. The only feature enabled was the memory EXPO setting, and the motherboard BIOS was updated to the latest version.

During a gaming session, the system suddenly went black and shut down. Upon attempting to restart, it encountered a power cycling failure and failed to boot up normally. Upon disassembling the system, it was discovered that the CPU surface exhibited obvious burn marks and localized bulging. Additionally, the motherboard CPU socket was damaged, rendering the entire motherboard inoperable.

From a technical standpoint, this bulging phenomenon typically signifies severe electromigration or a transient high-voltage breakdown within the CPU. Such issues can lead to instantaneous heat accumulation, ultimately causing the package to open up. This incident bears a resemblance to the collective burning incidents involving the Ryzen 7000 series processors that occurred in early 2023. In those cases, the primary cause was identified as excessively high SoC (System on a Chip) voltage, which resulted in physical damage to the chips. Manufacturers responded by updating the AGESA firmware to restrict SoC voltage within the safe range of 1.30V.

Currently, the damaged hardware is undergoing the post-sales repair process. Although this is highly likely an isolated extreme case, for users utilizing the X870 platform with EXPO enabled, it is advisable to closely monitor subsequent BIOS updates from motherboard manufacturers. Additionally, users should avoid blindly pursuing extreme voltage settings to prevent similar issues.
