NVIDIA is developing a new technology that aims to use SSDs (Solid State Drives) as additional video memory to enhance performance in gaming and AI scenarios. At the Black Hat 2026 cybersecurity conference, NVIDIA announced the open-sourcing of the cuFile API and its underlying storage software stack. As an interface component of the GPUDirect Storage technology, the cuFile API utilizes DMA technology to enable direct data transfer from storage devices such as NVMe drives to GPU memory, bypassing the main memory and achieving millisecond-level data transfer speeds. This effectively alleviates the 'GPU starvation' issue during AI inference. Additionally, NVIDIA has launched the Storage-Next initiative for the next-generation storage industry, which encompasses 40 leading storage and flash memory vendors.
