Samsung Electronics' 8-inch gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor wafer foundry line, situated in the Giheung campus of Yongin City, has run into reliability challenges during its trial production phase. Specifically, certain chips malfunctioned after approximately 1,000 hours of operation under high-temperature conditions, ranging from 100 to 200 degrees Celsius. This setback could potentially push back the originally planned mass production timeline, which was set for this year. The foundry line is exclusively tailored for GaN services, boasting a designed monthly production capacity of 1,300 to 1,500 wafers. While trial runs have recently concluded for several fabless customers, reliability issues began to surface during subsequent verification processes.
