Amidst a worldwide scarcity of memory chips fueled by the surge in generative AI, Apple is mulling over the incorporation of Chinese-manufactured memory chips into its products destined for the Chinese market. This strategic move aims to ease supply chain strains and trim expenses. Nevertheless, this proposal has drawn collective disapproval from a group of U.S. senators. They harbor concerns that such a step could pave the way for other firms, introduce national security vulnerabilities, and hasten the exodus of the U.S. semiconductor sector.
The senators underscored that if Chinese memory enterprises, which find themselves on the U.S. blacklist, infiltrate Apple's supply chain, it would reverberate across the U.S. industry. At present, Apple remains undecided on whether to green-light this plan, as it continues to weigh the policy stability and supply chain hazards involved.
