On July 30, Samsung Electronics forecasted that the chip shortage will deteriorate in the coming year and may extend its impact until 2028. The company explained that significantly boosting chip supply in the near term would be challenging, as it typically requires more than three and a half years from the establishment of new production facilities to the commencement of wafer production. Samsung Electronics noted that, based on current customer demand, the unfulfilled demand caused by supply shortages this year will spill over into next year, adding further pressure. Notably, the supply shortage is expected to escalate even more in 2027 and persist through 2028. Samsung Electronics underscored that even with increased capital investment from the industry, the time lag from factory construction to production remains substantial, making it difficult to substantially increase supply through capacity expansion before 2028. On the demand front, the widespread adoption of AI agents is fueling a surge in token consumption, resulting in a sharp rise in memory demand for both AI servers and general-purpose computing servers. Samsung Electronics highlighted that, despite the rapid expansion of memory demand, the industry's supply capacity falls far short of meeting customer requirements.
