Intel Reiterates CPU Development Roadmap: Hyper-Threading Technology Set for Comeback in 2028

Over the past few years, Intel has been progressively phasing out Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), widely recognized as hyper-threading technology, from its CPU core design strategies. This transformation commenced with the 12th Gen Core processors, which embraced a hybrid architecture integrating Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficiency-cores (E-cores). Within this framework, only the P-cores were equipped with hyper-threading capabilities, whereas the E-cores were not. With the launch of the Core Ultra 200 series, Intel fully discontinued the use of hyper-threading technology in its consumer-oriented offerings, preserving it solely for the Xeon 6 Performance-core processors (Granite Rapids). Moreover, the upcoming Xeon 7 Performance-core processors (Diamond Rapids) are also slated to forgo hyper-threading support, signifying a temporary abandonment of this technology across Intel's entire product range.
