While optical computing offers fast propagation speeds, it can sometimes be disadvantageous for signal processing. A joint team from Seoul National University and the University of Seoul has developed a programmable photonic integrated circuit capable of adjusting the propagation speed of optical signals on demand, enabling real-time regulation of their transmission characteristics. This breakthrough overcomes the limitations of inflexible regulation in traditional optical delay structures and is expected to drive the next generation of AI computing, optical communications, and data centers toward higher speeds and lower power consumption. The related paper was published in the latest issue of the journal Advanced Science.
