Over the past year, the prices of DRAM and NAND flash memory have skyrocketed. As the world's leading manufacturer of memory chips, Samsung has experienced unprecedented performance levels. In the first quarter of 2026, Samsung posted revenues of KRW 133.87 trillion and operating profits of KRW 57.23 trillion, representing an astonishing year-on-year surge of 756.1%. The semiconductor division played a pivotal role, contributing a substantial 94% to the total profits. However, the benefits have not been evenly distributed across all Samsung departments. The semiconductor division has rewarded its employees with generous bonuses, averaging around RMB 2.8 million per person. In contrast, the profitability of Samsung's mobile phone business has dwindled, with profits now amounting to a mere 1% of those generated by the semiconductor sector, highlighting a stark disparity. In response, Samsung is recalibrating its business operations in China, concentrating on mobile phones and memory chips while divesting from non-core businesses.
