On May 18, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple, long known for selling high-end, expensive products, has successfully developed a business selling cheaper devices at a time when most device manufacturers are being hit by rising costs. One of its secrets is to utilize slightly defective chips that might otherwise be scrapped. For example, the newly released $599 MacBook Neo uses an A18 Pro chip with one fewer GPU core than the iPhone 16 Pro. After disabling the defective core, the remaining part can still function, powering different, cheaper devices.
