On May 14, data released indicated that propelled by robust overseas demand for semiconductors and products integral to the AI ecosystem, South Korea’s exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products witnessed a significant surge in April compared to the same period last year. According to statistics from South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT, the export value of ICT products in April soared by 125.9% year-on-year, reaching a total of USD 42.7 billion. The ministry highlighted that this marked the largest year-on-year percentage increase since data collection commenced and also ranked as the second-highest export value in monetary terms. Specifically, semiconductor exports experienced a remarkable growth of 173.3%, totaling USD 31.9 billion, fueled by sustained investment in the AI sector, which drove excessive demand for memory chips. Additionally, driven by the demand for solid-state drives (SSDs)—a crucial component in the AI supply chain—exports of computers and related accessories skyrocketed by 430%, amounting to USD 4.3 billion.
