According to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung Electronics and its labor union were unable to secure a wage agreement at the eleventh hour, heightening the likelihood of a strike that could potentially disrupt operations at the world’s foremost producer of memory chips. This development comes on the heels of two days of intensive negotiations, which were overseen by South Korea’s labor authorities but ultimately failed to yield a resolution. A major point of contention between the union and management revolves around performance bonuses linked to AI-driven profit growth. The union is advocating for Samsung to eliminate the existing cap on bonuses, earmark 15% of operating profits for employee bonuses, and formally incorporate these terms into labor contracts.
