The collaboration between OpenAI and Broadcom to jointly develop custom AI chips has hit a financing deadlock. The two sides originally planned to jointly develop custom AI chips on a 10-gigawatt scale and are now negotiating for Broadcom to fund the initial phase of construction. This phase will require 1.3 gigawatts of data center computing power, with construction costs estimated at approximately $18 billion, while the total project cost is expected to reach as high as $180 billion. Broadcom has proposed that it will only provide financial support for the first phase of the project if Microsoft agrees to purchase nearly 40% of the chip production capacity. Currently, negotiations between the two sides have reached a potential stalemate.
