According to a Windows Latest survey, the size of Windows 11's monthly cumulative updates has surged from approximately 300MB in 2024 to 5GB in 2026, nearing 9GB after extraction. AI features have contributed to some of this increase, but the root cause lies in the update mechanism design. The update package size skyrocketed in May 2025, primarily due to the addition of dozens of MSIX components related to semantic search and local AI inference. Microsoft's adoption of the latest cumulative update model has led to a continuous increase in update package sizes. Enterprise users have been significantly impacted, with storage costs for single-architecture annual updates soaring from 11GB in 2024 to 52GB in 2026.
