Earlier, Microsoft unveiled a native NVMe driver tailored for the Windows Server 2025 server operating system. Prior to this, Microsoft's NVMe drivers depended on translation via outdated interface protocols, leading to performance degradation. This was the main impetus behind Microsoft's decision to create native drivers. The new native driver overhauls the storage stack, enabling multi-queue and lock-free I/O operations. It drastically cuts down latency, enhances IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second), and boosts CPU efficiency, with particularly significant performance gains in scenarios involving high concurrency.
