India is fervently striving to attain the capability of independently manufacturing cutting-edge chips within the next few years, underscoring its lofty aspirations to bolster its technology sector. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Indian Federal Minister for Science and Technology, announced that India intends to make a phased shift from producing 28-nanometer chips to those at the 2-nanometer level. To realize this objective, the Indian government has given the green light to 10 semiconductor projects, involving a staggering total investment of $18.2 billion. These projects span across the entire spectrum of chip development, encompassing design, manufacturing, testing, and packaging.

Nonetheless, India is confronted with a multitude of hurdles in the realm of chip manufacturing. These include the absence of indigenous production capabilities for chips exceeding 28 nanometers, insufficient infrastructure, a skewed talent pool, and a heavy reliance on imports for vital equipment and materials. Despite these formidable obstacles, India remains hopeful that through international collaboration and robust policy support, it can diminish its dependence on imports in certain domains. However, achieving complete independence across the entire chip production chain in the near term continues to be a daunting task.
