On Tuesday, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced that the company has appointed a new chief architect to spearhead the research and development (R&D) strategy for graphics processing units (GPUs). GPUs serve as the cornerstone of computational power for large language models and are currently developed by industry leaders such as Nvidia and AMD. With companies racing to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and data centers, the market demand for GPUs has witnessed an unprecedented surge.
Tan also addressed the ongoing shortage of storage chips in the tech sector, highlighting that the burgeoning demand from the AI field poses the greatest challenge to the storage chip industry. He further projected that the shortage is not expected to abate until 2028.
