On February 4, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan remarked on Tuesday that the ongoing shortage of memory chips in the computer industry is likely to continue for at least another two years, with no immediate signs of abatement. Tan cited conversations with two prominent leaders in the memory sector, who indicated that the current tight supply of memory chips might not see relief until 2028.

At present, the extensive development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure has substantially heightened the demand for memory chips. This surge in demand has resulted in a diminished supply for traditional computers and smartphones, leading to chip shortages and subsequent price increases. These factors could potentially dampen consumer purchasing power.

Tan also highlighted that Nvidia, a major supplier of AI processors, is set to further escalate memory demand with its latest Rubin platform and upcoming next-generation products. Given the memory-intensive nature of AI applications, this development is expected to exert additional pressure on the already strained memory chip market.
