Intel initially embarked on its business journey in the memory sector. However, more than 40 years ago, under the intense competitive pressure exerted by Japanese manufacturers, the company pivoted its focus towards the research, development, and production of CPUs. Now, Intel is set to make a comeback in the memory market. It has forged a partnership with SoftBank to develop the next generation of memory technology, known as ZAM.
As per the joint announcement, Intel will team up with SAIMEMORY, a subsidiary of SoftBank, to drive forward the commercialization of this cutting-edge memory technology. This technology draws upon the foundational principles and validated knowledge of the new-generation memory, which has been refined through Intel's Next-Generation Die Bonding (NGDB) initiative. Furthermore, it receives robust support from the AMT Advanced Memory Technology program, a collaborative effort involving three major national laboratories under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Energy.
