During the summer of 2022, French President Macron embarked on a special journey to Crolles, located in the Isère department, to lend his support to an ambitious expansion project. As outlined in the proposal, STMicroelectronics—a French-Italian semiconductor joint venture—alongside GlobalFoundries, an American chip foundry firm, are set to jointly invest a staggering 7.5 billion euros. This substantial investment aims to significantly expand the local wafer fabrication plant, doubling its production capacity in the process. The initiative is also banking on the EU's 'European Chips Act' as a catalyst to propel the reindustrialization of Europe's semiconductor sector, aligning with broader strategic goals.
