On December 2, 2025, it was reported that the Trump administration agreed to invest up to $150 million in startup company xLight to support its development of more advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies. According to the arrangement, the U.S. Department of Commerce will provide incentives to xLight. In return, the U.S. government will acquire equity in xLight and may become its largest shareholder. xLight is attempting to improve extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) technology, with the goal of producing lasers with wavelengths as low as 2 nanometers to help chip manufacturers etch even finer line widths on silicon wafers.
