As per reports from South Korean media outlets, NVIDIA has recently urged Samsung to double its production volume of GDDR7 memory chips. This strategic move is presumably linked to NVIDIA's latest AI GPU, the B40, which is designed exclusively for the Chinese market.
Due to the constraints imposed by U.S. export control regulations, NVIDIA did not manage to secure any revenue from its China-exclusive H20 chips during the second quarter. Following the release of the earnings report, NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, revealed in an interview that the company is actively engaging with the U.S. government in hopes of securing approval for its upcoming, China-exclusive AI GPU.
The new GPU, dubbed the B40, is anticipated to incorporate GDDR7 memory technology, steering clear of the HBM memory that is currently under export control restrictions. According to insider sources, NVIDIA's order for GDDR7 memory chips from Samsung could amount to a staggering 200 billion South Korean won, roughly equivalent to 1.026 billion yuan.
