The 2024 list of R&D investments by the world's top 20 semiconductor companies has been unveiled. Intel leads the pack with an investment of $16.55 billion, albeit at a modest growth rate of 3.1%. Samsung Electronics, on the other hand, witnessed a remarkable 71.3% surge in its R&D spending, propelling it to the third spot. NVIDIA closely trails behind with $12.5 billion, marking a 47% year-over-year increase. TSMC and SK Hynix rank seventh and tenth, respectively, with investments of $6.36 billion and $3.33 billion in R&D. Collectively, the top 20 semiconductor companies invested a total of $98.68 billion in R&D, reflecting a 17% increase from the previous year. Despite dedicating 33.6% of its revenue to R&D, Intel grapples with challenges related to the yield rate of its 18A process. NVIDIA, with plans to further bolster its R&D investment, is poised to overtake Intel next year, becoming the industry leader in R&D spending.
