Linus Torvalds has recently altered the maintenance status of the Bcachefs filesystem, designating it as 'externally maintained'. This shift signifies that forthcoming modifications to Bcachefs are unlikely to be integrated into the Linux kernel's mainline in the immediate future, although the filesystem will not be promptly removed from the kernel. This transition may aim to mitigate any immediate disruptions for users who currently rely on Bcachefs. Since its introduction in Linux kernel version 6.7 in January 2024, Bcachefs has showcased advanced features akin to Btrfs and ZFS, built upon nearly a decade of development. Torvalds' decision stems from differing viewpoints with the maintainer, Kent Overstreet, regarding development philosophy. Despite these challenges, Bcachefs is anticipated to continue its evolution as a standalone project.
