During the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey in 2023, Google's Android Earthquake Alerts System fell short of expectations. The system erroneously gauged the quake's magnitude to be between 4.5 and 4.9, leading to the dispatch of just 469 top-level alerts, while approximately 500,000 lower-level notifications were issued. Ideally, the system was designed to reach approximately 10 million individuals within a 158-kilometer radius of the epicenter with the highest level of alert.
Google has conceded that the issue arose due to limitations in the detection algorithm. The earthquake resulted in over 55,000 fatalities and more than 100,000 injuries, underscoring the significance of the system's performance in such dire circumstances.
