This cutting-edge initiative is helmed by former Scale AI CEO Wang Tao, with the co-management expertise of former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. Despite Meta's possession of the large language model Llama, the latest iteration, Llama 4, has lagged behind competitors like Google, OpenAI, and China's DeepSeek in performance benchmarks. In an effort to bolster its R&D capabilities, Meta is aggressively recruiting top talent to the lab by investing in AI startups, including OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and his team. However, analysts caution that Meta's foray into the AGI field may entail substantial risks, mirroring its significant investment in the Reality Labs project, which failed to meet anticipated returns.
