On October 28th, The Information released a report citing sources close to the matter, stating that OpenAI is in the process of planning to acquire Google’s artificial intelligence chips, aiming to reduce its reliance on Nvidia. Should OpenAI opt to purchase Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), it would represent a major milestone for Google’s chip division. At present, the precise financial terms and other specifics surrounding OpenAI’s acquisition of Google’s chips remain undisclosed. It has been reported that OpenAI is in the process of hiring an engineer to enhance the performance of its most advanced frontier models on TPUs. Last year, The Information reported that OpenAI had already started utilizing Google’s TPUs to diminish its reliance on Nvidia’s chips. This strategic move prompted Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, to act promptly, ultimately leading to Nvidia’s subsequent partnership with OpenAI under a new agreement. Nevertheless, an OpenAI spokesperson later clarified that the company currently has no definitive plans to exclusively utilize TPUs. The job posting suggests that OpenAI’s endeavors to optimize its models for TPUs are still in their nascent stages.
