On October 26, Anthropic identified climate change and environmental issues as potential risks in its initial public offering (IPO) application filing, emphasizing that maintaining company operations requires substantial electricity supply and infrastructure investment. Anthropic pointed out that climate change may increase operational costs over time, such as rising temperatures leading to higher electricity consumption and water usage for equipment cooling. Currently, artificial intelligence companies are facing intense scrutiny from advocacy groups, communities, regulators, and investors, with some states pushing for a moratorium on new data center construction to assess their potential environmental and electricity price impacts. Anthropic acknowledged in its S-1 filing that such opposition could damage the company's reputation. In contrast, SpaceX's initially submitted S-1 filing did not mention climate change, but subsequent revisions listed water resource shortages as a risk factor.
