Thariq Shihipar, the lead author of Claude Code, has departed from Anthropic. In his farewell message, he introduced the concept of "racing to the top," suggesting that competition within the AI sector can drive up industry standards and promote collective advancement, rather than being merely a zero-sum game. In the comments, he openly remarked that he perceives a decline in the performance of Opus 5.5. Thariq brings a rich and varied background, having worked in academia, major corporations, and venture capital. Upon joining Anthropic, he shifted his focus towards enhancing human-computer interaction, rather than just amassing computational resources. He put forward four industry viewpoints: large models already have surplus intelligence, and computational power is no longer the main constraint; powerful models can significantly cut down on system prompts by modularizing rules; HTML is the future path for high-density human-computer interaction; and in the future, humans will mainly act as distributors of computational power.
