Eavesdropping devices were found concealed at the headquarters of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, leading to the subsequent arrest of a Saudi employee by the FBI. This event has sparked market anxieties over the vulnerability of leading AI laboratories in the US to espionage.
According to OpenAI and US federal prosecutors, on September 30, the security team at OpenAI stumbled upon the eavesdropping devices during a routine security check. These devices were ingeniously hidden behind the back panel of a television set in the executive meeting room, and cleverly disguised with toilet paper to avoid detection. OpenAI has stated that the evidence gathered suggests the employee had intentions to install further recording devices in several key, sensitive areas of the office, with the aim of secretly capturing the contents of meetings.
