Liao Hongtao, previously serving as Co-CTO at UBTECH, has taken on the role of Head of Embodied AI at the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Embodied Intelligence (Futian Laboratory). This laboratory is a joint initiative between Tencent and the Digital Economy Research Institute of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. However, this appointment has not yet received official confirmation from either company. Presently, Liao Hongtao's team is actively recruiting experts in the field. The Futian Laboratory was officially launched in November 2024, with Tencent’s Chief Scientist, Zhang Zhengyou, appointed as its director. The laboratory is dedicated to advancing research in Embodied AI within human living environments, with a particular focus on achieving breakthroughs in core technologies such as perception, decision-making, and interaction within this domain. Its goal is to drive the development of home service robots and associated technologies. Tencent is implementing a platform-based strategy in the Embodied AI sector, emphasizing the development of robot brain technologies and making these capabilities accessible to hardware manufacturers, thereby minimizing redundant hardware development efforts.
