On September 29, the Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute unveiled six key think tank research findings in Beijing, including the Research on Energy Transition Pathways Towards 2035 and the inaugural release of the Outlook on the Trend of Bidirectional Empowerment Between Artificial Intelligence and Energy. The reports highlight that China’s energy sector has significantly accelerated the development and deployment of specialized large-scale AI models in recent years, with over 20 models introduced as of June 2026. By identifying high-value use cases, open-source scenarios, and pilot demonstrations, the energy industry is effectively translating real-world industry needs into focused directions for technological R&D and product innovation. This strategic shift moves AI applications from being purely “model-driven” to becoming “scenario-driven,” ensuring that technology, data, and computing power are concentrated in business processes that are frequent, high-value, measurable, and verifiable.
