On Tuesday, September 29 (local time), a high-profile lunch meeting will be convened by U.S. President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, bringing together top executives from leading AI companies. Among the attendees are Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA; Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic; Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir; and Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI, who is also expected to join the discussion. The focal point of the meeting will be the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence.
This gathering comes at a time when concerns over AI safety risks are escalating. Notably, AI industry leaders, including Amodei, have called for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI technologies to allow for a more thorough assessment and mitigation of potential risks. In line with this, Amodei met with Trump on Sunday evening and subsequently visited Congress on Monday to share his insights with Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Speaker Johnson has acknowledged that Congress may need to establish a regulatory framework for AI. However, he also noted that crafting such legislation would require time to reach a broad consensus. Consequently, it is unlikely that the U.S. Congress will pass any AI-related legislation in the near term. Currently, House members are on recess and are expected to reconvene after the midterm elections in November. Similarly, the Senate is planning to commence a pre-election recess later this week.
