Microsoft once introduced the Copilot+ PC brand, with the ambition to spearhead the evolution of the next-generation Windows experience and AI-powered PCs. To be part of this brand, devices were required to incorporate an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) boasting computational prowess exceeding 40 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), thereby enabling the seamless execution of local AI tasks. Nevertheless, the Copilot+ PC brand has gradually waned in prominence, owing to a confluence of factors. These include safety concerns swirling around the Recall feature, a brand name that failed to resonate logically with consumers, a tumultuous initial launch, and the tarnished reputation of Microsoft Copilot itself. Presently, Microsoft opts to directly spotlight the inherent capabilities of the devices, such as their prowess in local AI computation and NPU performance, rather than pigeonholing AI PCs under a singular, unified brand umbrella. Despite the gradual ebbing away of the Copilot+ PC brand, the set of specification benchmarks it once embodied remains intact. Microsoft persists in propelling the development of AI PCs, albeit through a different strategic lens.
