SpaceX, under the ownership of Musk, is engaged in internal discussions regarding the acquisition of customer information and operational data from struggling or defunct startups. The primary motivation behind this move is to enhance its artificial intelligence model, Grok, at a relatively lower cost. Previously, Grok predominantly relied on content sourced from the X platform to shape its distinctive features, with a dedicated team of AI tutors providing supplementary professional expertise. At present, Grok's data training is transitioning from an initial rapid development phase to a more structured and engineered production phase. The proposed purchase of data from failed companies is aimed at addressing gaps in real-world business scenario data, with related discussions still in an exploratory and informal stage. It's worth noting that Musk is not alone in this approach. Google, too, once placed a bid of $10 million in an auction for the business data of Spirit Airlines, a bankrupt and restructuring U.S. budget carrier, with the intention of using it for AI training. However, the deal was ultimately shelved due to privacy concerns. Currently, Grok is experiencing a downturn in both downloads and paid conversion rates, placing it behind competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic in the fiercely competitive AI landscape. Meanwhile, Google's Gemini model is also underperforming compared to expectations.
